Portage Road will be completely closed from June 3 to 7
Yes, they are making progress, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be pain in the final stretch of construction for the Portage Road – Kilgore Road – I-94 Interchange project. This may have taken into account the recent closure of a popular restaurant in this area.
The Michigan Department of Transportation sent out an announcement today ahead of the work which will begin this Friday and continue through Tuesday of next week. Here’s what to expect:
M-Dot says “there will be a total closure of Portage Road between the eastern and western sections of Kilgore Road in Kalamazoo from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 3 until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, in order to fix the bridge girders for the 94 I-Bridge over Portage Road During the closure, traffic will be diverted to Milham Road, Westnedge Avenue and Kilgore Road.
And for added enjoyment, “there will also be intermittent single-lane closures on I-94 eastbound at Portage Road beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 4 through 8 p.m. Sunday, June 5.”
This is the second year of the project, and although the original goal was to be completed around Thanksgiving, it looks like it won’t be finished until mid-December due to weather and other factors.
Thinking about the time and duration of this project, a Google search revealed that there are four main materials used in road construction.
These are asphalt, concrete, composite pavement and recycled materials.
The Asian equipment supplier Mulico explains “Composite pavements bring together the best aspects of asphalt and concrete to form a ‘super’ pavement. Typically, concrete is used as the base layer which provides structural capability while asphalt is used for the surface that provides a wearing course Composite pavements, compared to more traditional flexible and rigid pavements, have the potential to become a more cost-effective alternative as they can offer better levels of performance and longevity, both structurally and functionally.
