Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society offers free tickets to summer concert at Methodist Church to Ukrainian refugees
Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society (BSCS) will host a relaxed evening of summer music at the newly refurbished South Street Methodist Church on Saturday June 25 and will be offering free tickets to Ukrainian refugees who have fled conflict in their home country and are now living In the region, written Helen Miller.
The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., includes short songs by composers Bruckner, Grieg and Parry as well as popular tunes by songwriters Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin. The choir will also perform a number of well-known English folk songs and A Ukrainian Prayer by John Rutter.
Prompted by the terrible events in Ukraine, Rutter – who is one of Britain’s most famous living composers – wrote an unaccompanied choral setting with an anonymous Ukrainian prayer.
Rutter has since provided the score free of charge to thousands of choirs around the world and says he hopes the meaning of the text will “resonate in people’s hearts and reach the Ukrainian people in times of need”:
Lord, protect Ukraine.
Give us strength, faith and hope,
Our Father, our Father.
BSCS will sing the work in the Ukrainian language and the whole choir works hard to get the pronunciation right and do it justice.
“The Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is proud to support the local community and we felt it was also important to show our support for our Ukrainian guests by welcoming them to our concert and singing a piece in their native language. The evening consists of also to celebrate it’s all good for the summer with lots of upbeat songs and popular folk tunes,” said BSCS President Ros Rowe.
The summer concert follows an eventful spring term, which saw the choir team up with the Barnet Choral Society for a very successful joint 80th anniversary concert at Saffron Hall in Saffron Walden, where they performed the conductor- Elgar’s masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius, to a sold-out audience.
This month BSCS are delighted to perform again in the heart of Bishop’s Stortford at one of their regular venues. This is the choir’s first concert at the Methodist Church since the completion of the stunning redevelopment, creating a fabulous venue for performing live music in the local community. The evening will include a raffle and refreshments will be served in between.
Tickets are available at www.singwithbscs.org.uk or on site on the day of the concert.
For free tickets for Ukrainian guests, please email [email protected] or inquire via the contact form on the website. Please note that accompanying guests are required to pay the full ticket price of £12. All under 16s and students are free.
New members are always welcome and no audition is required. Rehearsals are at 7:45 p.m. every Thursday during term time at Water Lane United Reformed Church. If you want to join BSCS, you can find more information on the website. You can also follow the choir on Facebook and on Twitter @BSChoralSoc.
